FAQ

The following page is a translation of two FAQs that were written by Japanese fans of the movie. I have taken out what I thought was important (nearly the complete FAQs) and combined them together. It mainly aims to answer the many similar questions that viewers had after watching the movie and so there will be many spoilers.

Also note that the Japanese fans make reference to a replica script book and an Omega book. The replica script book as the name suggests, contains the script used in making the FFVII:AC movie and comes with the Limited Edition pack only. The "Omega" book on the other hand, is the "FFVII: Ultimania Omega" book which was released a few days just before the movie and contains lots of deep insight into the original FFVI game.

Finally, you may also want to know that Tetsuya Nomura, the director behind the movie said the following:

TetsuyaFFVII:AC is piece of work made by Japanese people. In Hollywood movies, I think there is a tendency where the meaning of all the scenes have to be expressed clearly but, this isn't something like that. With our work, the viewer is free to decide how they interpret or enjoy it. The staff has their own answers to all the scenes in the movie such as the angel statue that makes an appearance many times. But, even if someone who have watched it interprets it differently then that is just another answer. I guess "comparing answers" with friends is one of the ways you can enjoy the movie. I think FFVII:AC is a movie that makes those who have watched it, want to talk about it with others.

So, with that all in mind, please select which version of the FAQ you wish to read.

I also recommend reading the FFVII:AC articles at FlareGamer.
It gives some more interesting insight into the movie
(mainly translated commentary) as well as a little
biography about Tetsuya, the man himself.

Q. What's this "498 years ago" that appears in the opening?
A.

The opening scene of FFVII:AC (where Red XIII appears with his two cubs) was what the original FFVII world was like 500 years later after Meteor was destroyed. The main movie of FFVII:AC takes place much earlier than that. The story begins 2 years after the Meteor incident and thus, they display 498 years ago. There, confused? :p

Q. What is the name of the city? Isn't it "Midgar"?
A.

The place where Tifa's business and Denzel lives is called "Edge". The place where the Shinra President and Turks are is called the "Healin". In the last part of the movie, the battle takes place in Midgar.

Q. What's the significance of the grey wolf that appears from time to time?
A.

(From those that watched the Limited Edition commentary.)
The grey wolf appears on the hill where Zack was killed, the church where Aeris was and the Forgotten City. It represents Cloud's feelings, his guilt for certain things that has happened. After he comes to terms with everything, the grey wolf disappears, returning to Cloud.

There's also people suggesting that it represents Zack watching over Cloud. Both can be thought of as the producer's intentions.

Q. Why is the Shinra president (Rufus) covered in a cloth?
A.

From P60 of the Prologue book.

Why is he sitting in the wheelchair throughout the movie?
It's just a disguise. Rufus is someone who has a great desire for attention so maybe his fake acting has something to do with that.

Q. Who's Denzel? Is Tifa his mother?
A.

Denzel is one of the earlier characters that make an appearance in FFVII:AC. Tifa was only taking care of him because he was an orphan.

Q. Both Cloud and Tifa has a red ribbon on their arms? Is there a meaning to them?
A.

A post by Mr. Anon on a message board.

In some scenes we can see a red ribbon on Cloud's arm. What is that?
Nomura:
That is the ribbon that links all the friends together.

From an unknown source.

Nomura: They tied it to themselves and their friends in memory of a certain someone. So that they don't forget about that person.

Locations of where the ribbon is tied for each character.

Cloud:
Tifa:
Barret:
Vincent:
Yuffie:
Cid:
Cait Sith:
Red XIII:
Marlene:
On left arm. He doesn't show it until the second half of the movie.
Left arm.
On his left wrist. Looks kind of short.
Right arm.
Left arm.
Left arm.
Left arm. Because of the size of his arm, it feels like it's on his wrist.
The front left leg above his bangle. They're the same colour so it's hard to spot.
It looks like the ribbon in tying back her hair.

Q. What was all that Materia doing inside a box?
A.

From P61 of the Prologue book.

Is Yuffie still going around gathering Materia?

Nomura:

No, she's a busy person. Yuffie entrusted them to Cloud because Materia is so dangerous but, Cloud didn't care about the Materia at all and that's why Marlene got to throw it around (laughs).

Q. Why is it so peaceful between the Turks and Cloud's friends?
A.

The Turks are always being treated as the bad guys for doing their "job" going after Aeris and also blowing up Sector Seven. But in fact, Cloud (along with others in Avalanche) also blew up the Sector One reactor which caused many innocent deaths.

In this incident (the movie) Rufus, who always seems to be scheming something, probably told them to help Cloud. Reno did say "We're rebuilding Shinra Inc." and that may have been what he was really after but... Well, don't think about it too much.

Xcomp: I think he's trying to say both sides had their own good and bad deeds. In such a way that they became neutral with one another.

Q. Isn't Edge far away from the Forgotten City?
A.

Edge is on the outskirts of Midgar and the Forgotten City is north of Midgar. Since there's a sea in between Midgar and the Forgotten City then it must mean the Turks must have given them a ride along the way. Both places must be directly close to one another.

Besides that, they managed to get there without a Lunar Harp so... They must still have had it from FFVII.

Q. What is the water that Kadaj lets the children drink?
A.

So that he could activate the Jenova cells within people who were infected by the Geostigma disease, Kadaj fused some of his body's will into the water. You can think of it as a way of helping him find his mother. Activating the Jenova cells in them allowed them to track were the real Jenova was.

Q. What is Cloud's sin?
A.

In FFVII, there were times when he didn't manage to save those precious to him. Even though it wasn't entirely his fault, not being able to save them was a great "sin" to himself.

In the movie, Cloud didn't know what he had to do until Vincent says to Cloud, "You haven't tried (atoning for your sin). It's not about whether you can redeem yourself. The most important thing is that you try."

Cloud answers, "I'll try. I'll contact you to let you know how it goes." That may have been Vincent's way of thanking Cloud for letting him understand how he was trying to atone for his sins by sleeping in FFVII.

Q. What was Vincent on about when everyone was gathering together again?
A.

"Where is the telephone shop."

Marlene had said to Cloud in the Forgotten City, "I want to talk to Tifa!". She was flurrying after she found out Cloud dropped it during his fight.

Then Marlene asked Vincent, "Do you have one?" Vincent had flipped opened his mantle to show that he didn't. Marlene reacts by saying she couldn't believe it.

  • He was very hurt from what Marlene said
  • When Cloud said he would contact Vincent about how his atonement was going, he realized that he had to have a phone. So it seemed he went all the way there just to buy a phone (It's unknown whether it was his idea of a joke or he was just being frank.)

If you want to know whether he bought a mobile or not, watch the Digest that's on the same disk as the movie.

Q. What's that Bahamut called?
A.

Bahamut Shin (Quake).

All the Bahamut names in FFVII are taken from Japanese fighter aircrafts.

Note that in the Prologue book it has the name romanized as "Sin" which is also what a few people have been refering to it as too. This isn't wrong but it does confuse people. It's still pronounced as "shin".

The reason why it's romanized as "sin" is because they're using the Kunrei romanization system which misses out the "h" in "shi". The Kunrei rominization system is more widespread in Japanese schools while the Hepburn system is more commonly used outside of Japan and in fansubs.

Q. Are they superhumans?
A.

Everyone seemed to have reached level 99. Only Cloud kind of managed to surpass that level. However, the Turks were much lower level.

Q. When did the President have the box?
A.

It seemed he had the box in his left hand when he called Cloud. it looked like he was enjoying the excitement of holding it.

Q. Didn't Tseng die?
A.

When you talked to him in FFVII at the Temple of the Ancients, he was still alive. But afterwards, he didn't get to appear much so most people thought he was dead (even in the Omega book it had "Depair...?" written in it). While Cloud's party made their way in, they saved him so he managed to survive.

Q. What happened to Cloud's sword?
A.

Cloud's new sword consists of six swords; one central sword known as the "Fast Sword" (as described in the commentary) with five others attached to it. A detailed drawing and analysis of it can either be at the original Korean site or in English.

Q. Why did Kadaj cry out when he looked inside the box?
A.

Pick one of the following reasons for yourself:
- It was in such a state, he couldnt stand looking at it.
- He was overjoyed.
- The power came flowing out of it.

(From the replica script book.)
The box was broken by Cloud.
Kadaj checks the box and looked like he was filled with joy.
But the box was damaged, the contents were injured.
With an expression of surprise and sadness, he held onto the box tightly.
Kadaj yells out.
He thought to himself that the President must have damaged it and not Cloud.
It makes him cry out in sorrow because only his mother was being hurt.

Q. Why couldn't Cloud and his friends use Materia?
A.

It's unknown why. Even so, they were strong without the Materia.

Q. Why was there no blood even though they were stabbed and beaten?
A.

It was corrected so that even nice children can watch it.

Q. What was the move used against Sephiroth's called?
A.

According to the commentary, its name was Omnislash Ver 5. It's unknown why it's called "Ver. 5". They probably revised it many times during production.

Q. Any Limit Breaks from the FFVII game?
A.

Cloud:

  • Blade Beam when he had to counter Loz's wave attack.
  • Braver when he leaped towards Bahamut Sin's head.
  • Climhazzard to finish off Bahamut.
  • Finishing Touch when he defeats Kadaj, knocking him to the edge.
  • Braver again when he leaps from a building during the fight with Sephiroth.
  • Omnislash (Ver. 5), the same move that finished Sephiroth off in the game.

Tifa

  • Beat Rush to start off the fight with Loz in the church after she puts on gloves.
  • Waterkick when Loz knocks her back to the flower bed.
  • Somersault as she leaps off the walls attacking Loz relentlessly.
  • Meteor Strike as she springs off the wall, knocking Loz into the air then slamming him into the seats

Cid

  • Boost Jump during Bahamut fight.

Red XIII

  • Sled Fang after Cait Sith cries out as Red XIII hangs onto Bahamut.

Aerith

  • Great Gospel , the water came down as rain healing those infected with Geostigma.

Q. Did the rain that managed to cure the Geostigma disease have anything to do with Aeris?
A.

The rain was something like sacred water that was part of Aeris' limit break, Great Gospel.

Q. So who or what was "Mother" in the end?
A.

The "mother" Kadaj and the others were referring to was Jenova. Think of the time when Cloud muttered "mother" as he felt the warmth from his hands on his forehead.

Q. So in the end, just who was Kadaj, Loz and Yazoo?
A.

Quoting from a message board.

They were part of the large number of souls that took physical form as Sephiroth's consciousness spread into them. But the souls were only parts of his conciousness so they didn't have the knowledge of Sephiroth. Their instinct was Reunion, to obtain Jenova and return to Sephiroth. They didn't really want to return to Sephiroth. In the end, they returned to the Lifestream.

Q. So in the end, who was the one leading the enemy? Jenova or Sephiroth?
A.

Quoting from a message board.

Sephiroth. Jenova only made use of its power, Reunion. It had no intellect.

This was also written in the Omega book. Because Sephiroth had greater intentions than Jenova, he ended up being the leader. The Sephiroth that appeared before Cloud since they left Midgar was actually Jenova. It could have headed north to lure Cloud and his friends to Nibelheim but, Sephiroth told it to bring the Black Materia so it ended up going south revealing its true form.

Q. Was the voice actress for Aeris the same as the one for Yuna's in FFX?
A.

No. It was Maya Sakamoto.

Q. Was there a meaning in the number of birds there were? (From commentary)
A.

There was 29 birds. It's rumoured there was 29 people in the staff when FFVII went on sale but it's unknown if it's true or not.

Q. Is there a meaning to the goddess statue? (From commentary)
A.

They're refering to the angel statue you could see sometimes. Whether it has any meaning to it is unknown.

Q. What is that Geostigma disease that's going around?
A.

At the end of FFVII, the Lifestream that came flowing out from the planet also absorbed the Lifestream that belonged to the last boss, Sephiroth. This meant that Jenova and Sephiroth's thoughts ended up existing inside the planet's Lifestream. Thus, anyone who came into contact with the Lifestream and who were weak both mentally or physically can get infected.

Q. Any easter eggs?
A.

Watch closely and you'll notice the following. Some of them shows you how much attention has been put into the movie's detail.

  • 0:05:31
An ad for "Loveless, Open 5/25 18:00". Loveless is a popular album released by an Irish-British band named "My Bloody Valentine" back in 1991. Looks like there are some fans in Squarenix!

A silhouette of Cloud. Looks like the cover of the FFVII PSX case mirrored. You have to be really fast to catch this one, just before the camera zooms over behind Tifa as she turns round to go into Cloud's office.
  • 0:07:21
Next to the "family" photo of Cloud, Tifa, Denzel and Marlene, there's an empty can of "Shinra Amino D". Protein drinks such as the popular Pocari Sweat in Japan contain amino acids that help atheletes strengthen and grow their muscles. Shinra joining the drinks business too now?

Look what fell on Rude. Another big Loveless ad.
  • 0:53:17
Do I see ghosts? There's some transparent citizens running away on the bottom-right corner.

  • 0:58:11
Close-up of the chocobo sign again behind Yuffie.
  • 0:58:18
