A naive individual who acts according to his feelings. Not good at thinking, often he scolds the ones around him when a problem arises and he can't make sense of it.
Barret was once the former leader of an anti-Shinra group known as "Avalanche". Although he doesn't have the talents of a leader, he does manage to make everyone around him work together.
Even to this day, Barret is burdened by the loss of his wife Mina and his friend Dyne, along with what happened to his hometown.
Biography
Long before Mako became the main source of energy around the world, Barret was just a coal miner in Corel. But as the Mako that Shinra Inc. provided became widespread, life in Corel became harsh as the villagers could no longer make a living from their coal. It was then that a representative from Shinra Inc., Scarlet arrived at Corel and offered to build a Mako reactor there, promising to give them jobs and improve their quality of life.
While most of the villagers including Barret himself, were in favour of Shinra Inc's plan, Barret's best friend Dyne wasn't because he didn't want to abandon the mines that their ancestors had worked in. But, with a little more persuasion from everyone, Dyne also agreed and plans went ahead.
One day, when Barret and Dyne were heading back after checking on the progress of the reactor, one of the villagers came running to them, telling them that Shinra troops were attacking their village. Going up to a cliff, they saw the town in flames. Just as Barret and Dyne was about to run back in hope of saving any survivors, they too are attacked by Scarlet and Shinra troops. Barret managed to grab a hold of Dyne's arm just as he fell over the edge but, the intense fire hit Barret's right arm and Dyne fell.
Later, Barret managed to escape back to the village. He searched desparately for survivors but he found none apart from Dyne's baby daughter Marlene who was less than a year old. All the other villagers including Barret's wife, Mina were gone.
Afterwards, he also took responsibility for Marlene and brought her up like his own daughter over the years. And with a grudge against Shinra, Barret had his disabled right arm operated on so that he could implant weapons to it. Although what happened to his hometown was not entirely his fault, he blamed himself greatly for what took place.
Before long, he heard of the anti-Shinra group, Avalanche. Joining Biggs, Wedge and Jessie, he became the leader of their operations against Shinra. Even though he said that he was fighting to protect the Planet, he knew that in truth, it was for his own revenge. It was only later did he realize that what he was doing was wrong. |
