Using the Translations

You are free to use my translations but please provide a link back to this site and credit my work under my real name, "LH Yeung" instead of Xcomp. That way, you can give credit to me as well as let your readers know about the original translations should you decide to modify the contents (e.g., for clarity purposes). If you can, please let me know where you will be hosting them via email so that I have a general idea of what people are doing with them. Although very few, it saddens me to find sites with plagiarism of my work using Copyscape. It gives me less reason to do any more translations.

Mistakes and Corrections

Before anyone criticises my translations, I'd just like to point out that I'm simply sticking to as close to the original text as possible. Kazushige Nojma's writing style is very simplistic reading very much like a script than a novel which a lot of Japanese readers have also said. In my opinion, I think he uses too many short sentences and doesn't spend much time building up the scenes. He jumps between the character's thoughts and narration text too often and suddenly.

In other words, if you really want his stories to read like a novel, you will have to spend quite some time re-wording.

The Beginning

At first, like many others, I constantly checked the official Japanese FFVII:AC website in anticipation of the best CGI movie yet and also, to see the FFVII characters in their real life-like forms. Then one day, I saw the first chapter of the On the Way to a Smile novel being published on the site and after reading through it, the point of perspective it used caught my interest.

In most epic stories where disaster breaks out, the reader is made to focus only on the heroes that save the day and, very little attention is paid towards the average people and areas that were affected by it. However, in On the Way to a Smile's first story Case of Denzel, we see how the happy life of one young ordinary boy was completely shattered during the "accident" that occurred at the beginning of Final Fantasy VII. Not only that, we also see how the disaster has affected many others too through his perspective, amplifying the overall impact on the story.

While most stories also end with the heroes saving the day and "living happily ever after", the second story Case of Tifa sees us returning to the heroes as they try to get back to their normal, everyday lives. Of course, it's not that easy and we see them go through all sorts of problems that you yourself can experience in real life, making the characters and the Final Fantasy VII world even more believable. And that was when I decided to translate the novels and other Final Fantasy VII related material, forming this site.
